字面意思是“得到斧子”和“给某人斧子”，

这里 axe“砍”的意思，引申为(被)解雇、(被)炒鱿鱼的意思。
　　Senior staff are more likely to get the axe because the company can't afford their high salaries.
　　高级职员更有可能被炒，

因为公司负担不起他们的高薪水。
　　I’m afraid that some of us will be given the axe because of the incident.
　　我担心我们当中会有人因为这次事件而被炒鱿鱼。

heave-ho /'hi:v'həu/ 是“抛弃”“扔 掉”的意思，

get the heave-ho 和 give sb. heave-ho 指(被)开除或解雇。
　　In my opinion,

he should simply get the heave-ho for his irresponsibility.
　　依我之见，他就应该因他的不负责任而被开除。
　　If you continue to behave in this way,

I’ll have to give you the heave-ho from the company.
　　如果你继续这样的行为，

我得把你从公司撵走。

pink slip“粉红的小纸条”，

在美国公司老板如果要解聘员工，

就在员工的工资袋里加一张“粉红纸条”，

说明雇员被解雇的原因。约定成俗，

pink slip 就成了解雇通知书的同义词。
　　He told them they better shape up or they'll get a pink slip.
　　他告诉他们要好好干，

否则会被解雇。

字面意思是“把某人踢出来”，

真正含义是“把某人开除”。
　　They kicked me out.
　　他们把我开除了。

The next morning I telephoned him and gave him his notice.
　　第二天早晨我给他打了电话，

通知他已被解雇。

My boss told me to find a "better" job.
我老板叫我“另谋高就”。

If you lose your job, I’ll lose mine.
